Kenmore Library – Honor Award Recipient

Location: Kenmore, WA
Architect: Weinstein A/U Architects and Urban Designers
Agency/Owner: King County Library System
General Contractor: Sierra Construction Co.

The Kenmore Library is a new 10,000-square-foot building with a 9,000-square-foot below-grade parking garage. It was completed in June 2011.

The building design is focused on a highly visible and transparent reading room, which is intended as a civic gesture of welcoming community space, and as a counterpoint to the suburban context of retail buildings, surface parking and a busy highway.

The project was designed and constructed on a limited budget. The construction cost for the library and the parking garage was $3.5 million, or $185 per square foot combined.
